In May 2005, the New York City Council approved the Department of City Planning's rezoning proposal for the waterfront neighborhoods of Greenpoint and Williamsburg in Brooklyn, permitting light industrial and residential buildings to coexist. While always mixed-use neighborhoods, this proposal paved the way for additional housing and public space development along two miles of Brooklyn's East River Waterfront and upland neighborhoods. Height restrictions were significantly relaxed which allowed for taller residential complexes and incentivized developers to convert vacant industrial buildings into luxury high–rise living spaces. In addition, the plan called for the development of 50 acres of open space, including a continuous public esplanade and a 28-acre park surrounding the Bushwick Inlet.

This book documents this rapid architectural transformation of these neighborhoods the past 10 years.
